Me aged 10 on Safari – Kenya

I have had a love affair with Africa since I was 10 years old when my father, a research scientist, took us to live in Ethiopia. I remember at the time being devastated that I had to leave my school and friends, but it ended up being one of the best years of my life.

I have always had the desire to share the magic of Africa with my own family and in 2007 I took them on a wonderful trip to Kenya and Tanzania.

This year our youngest daughter Paris is taking a gap year (a year between high school and university), something I embrace wholeheartedly. Mind you, I don’t embrace a year spent on the sofa, but if a young adult spends their time volunteering, travelling and working, they are so better prepared for the real world and perhaps may make better study choices having learned what is important in life to them.

Paris is planning to study medicine next year so having a break before she starts the next 10-12 years of study I think is a very intelligent choice. She has spent the past 5 months working and saving money. She has really learned the real value of money. Kids these days are often sheltered from the realities of life.
Last week she embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. She headed off to Tanzania on her own to engage in a Gapmedic program.

Greene expressed concern, though, that the head start program was targeted for the pay restriction based on isolated https://www.overnightessay.co.uk/ incidents, while other federal programs were not

Happy Mothers Day!

Sunday, May 13th, 2012

My gorgeous Mum (I’m on the right)

This year, Mother’s Day is a little different! It is the first time that we (David, Maddie, Paris and I) have not been all together for Mother’s Day. Both David and Paris are away. David is away on business and Paris is on an exciting African adventure. Don’t worry, I have not been forgotten. They organised an early celebration for me!

Today I am looking forward to a celebratory lunch honouring motherhood with my mother and sister, and the rest of the clan.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Tradition

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

Dying Easter Eggs has been a tradition in our family forever! However when I saw these beautiful hand-painted eggs over at Decor8, I wondered if we should try painting our eggs next year? Aren’t they gorgeous? I love the delicate colour palette Leslie has chosen. I’m not sure if my hand is steady enough though.

Dying eggs is not an Australian tradition. Here in Brisbane it can be difficult finding eggs with really nice white shells.

Do you have any Easter traditions?

Have an egg-cellant weekend friends!!!

I Think I Deserve A Medal

Friday, April 6th, 2012

This week was a momentus week for our family. Paris (our baby) got her driving license! And I never have to supervise another hour of driving ever again, yay! Do you know what a relief this is?

Here in Australia Learner drivers need to complete 100 hours of supervised driving over a 12 month period before they become eligible to sit their driving test. It is a great initiative which David and I embrace totally. Everything that we can do to try and develop safer, more confident young drivers is a plus, right?

Now Maddie was a reluctant driver and did not want to learn to drive until she turned 18, by which time Paris had her Learner’s permit too. So lucky me…I got to supervise both girls almost simultaneously. I think my fingernails are imprinted into the armrests and maybe my nerves are a bit shot too?

And I am a stickler for rules and made the girls do every single minute!

I’m Feeling Old!

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Maddie turned 20 today. Where did the years go?

We began celebrations by going out for breakfast.

And ended with cake, presents and a bang (the balloons actually blew the candles out)!

Happy Birthday Maddie. We love you to the moon and back. xxx

Happy Australia Day

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Torrential rain threatened to dampen Paris’ Australia Day celebrations today. The party pooper in me 🙂 was hoping that it would be too wet to host twenty 17-year-old girls for a pool party! But the sun shone through and the party went ahead.

Of course a sausage sizzle was a must!

And there is nothing more Australian than finishing with a ‘pav’ (pavlova).

Happy Australia Day! How did you celebrate?

How Strange Does It Feel?

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Today feels very strange! You see, school is back after the summer holidays. And for the very first time in 16 years there was no back-to-school stress in our household. No shoes to buy, books to cover, lunches to make…I am free! Well sort of.

I didn’t realise how much I used to enjoy having the house to myself during the day! I don’t know if anyone else can relate to this? But I do enjoy my own company. Seeing the kids young adults still in pajamas at lunchtime will take some getting used to. Only 4 more weeks until uni starts, but who’s counting!

Dumplings {To Die For}

Friday, January 20th, 2012

We really loved having my nephew Sam and his girlfriend Wei home from Beijing for the holidays. Wei is an absolute darling and such fun to have around.

One night she cooked up an incredible Chinese feast for us all, including dumplings from scratch!

There was plenty of laughter and frivolity, a given when my family’s together. And Wei’s feast was amazing!

Suit Up

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

2012 was certainly full of formal occasions for Paris. I’m not sure how she was able to focus on her studies or whether it was what kept her going.

Trends have really changed over the years, now girls are wearing both long and short dresses. I think the shorter dresses actually are a lot more practical, in that they will get more wear out of them, but there is certainly something glamorous about a long gown. Earlier in the year Paris wore a long gown to her school Ball and a short one to this formal.

Paris’ own School Formal (Prom) was in early October but because I flew out to London the next day I never got around to doing a post, until now.

Doesn’t she look gorgeous in her Carla Zampatti dress? A little parental bias here 🙂

Now a Formal is almost a 24 hour event! They start getting ready early in the day with hair and make up appointments. Then they go to a Pre-Formal Function late in the afternoon, where the parents get to socialise, see the girls and their partners all dolled up and get photos. Then they go to the actual Formal which is a sit down dinner with dancing (Paris and her friends went in a stretch Hummer).  And then when you think they should be exhausted and wanting to going home to bed…haha…they have a Post Party, at one of the student’s homes, until the wee hours of the morning! Oh to have that kind of stamina again :).

Some of these lenders have recently become more stringent in their requirements, particularly for students with poor https://collegepapers.co.uk credit who attend high-cost institutions with low graduation rates

Christmas Day {In Review}
