Pantry Update

Well I finally did it! Organise my pantry that is. It only took me 5 months but as they say better late than never.

Remember my post titled Pantry Blues… Not only have I been wanting a more visually appealing pantry but I also have wanted a more ‘healthy’ pantry. I became aware a while back about the concern around chemical leaching and plastic containers and wanted to change over our food storage to glass. I have to admit that aside from being a safer option I love the look of glass jars. The only downside is that they do not stack so it is not the most space efficient method. But sometimes aesthetics have to come before practicality, don’t you agree? In saying that though they are practical in that you can see exactly what is in each jar. I also found some great white baskets to store odds and ends and all my tinned food supplies.

Now I find myself wandering into my pantry at every opportunity, purely to have a little look. Pretty sad hey!

The jars and baskets where found at Ikea.

A few years ago I was getting sick of the monotony of having to cook every night and I just hated it when the first question from the girls after school was “What’s for dinner?” I think my frustration grew out of lack of planning. I would decide what to cook mostly in the evening of that day and then was limited by what was in the pantry.

I knew I needed to bring the joy back into my kitchen and decided to get better at planning ahead. So I bought a weekly planner (diary). Every Sunday I try and sit down and flick through my cookbooks and food magazines for inspiration. I plan out the meals for the week ahead and check the pantry to see what ingredients I need to add to my shopping list.  .

I also started to think about how I could simplify life even further by making double quantities of meals so I only have to cook every 2nd night. It doesn’t always work out that way, as we all might have second-helpings or someone may sneak some for lunch. But when we do have left-overs, I love it! Am I the only one that thinks left-overs actually taste better?

What do you do to simplifying the daily grind of cooking? I’m always looking for great ideas.

Home Sweet Home

Jan 23, 2011

It is good to be home – I think? I have never felt this way before, but with all my travels in the last 12 months (13 weeks all up) I am looking forward to being a homebody, for a little while a least.

Now the thing I hate most about returning home from a holiday is the unpacking.  I always have great intentions but then I start reading my email, opening the mail, stocking the pantry, doing the laundry and before you know it a week has passed and my suitcase is still sitting front and centre on the bedroom floor!

Tomorrow I’m going to finish unpacking, for real,  because I still have to put away my Christmas tree too! Please tell me I am not the only one!?!  I know it’s almost February but… I only put it up on Christmas Eve. And that’s another story

P.S. Next week I am going to start a weekly travel post called Global Roaming, so make sure you stop by.

Pantry Blues

When we designed our new home almost 4 years ago (boy how time fly’s) I was very excited about incorporating a butlers pantry. I just love having that second fridge and sink and so much extra storage space. One of the best parts is that it can all be hidden behind a sliding door!

And it is everything I dreamed of… well until I saw the pantry of Emerson of Emersonmade (below). Now I think I have pantry envy! Have you ever seen anything so organised before? I love the baskets she uses on the bottom shelf and the lovely glass canisters on the lower shelves.

I have let organisation in my pantry slip a bit this year, well maybe a lot. I’ll blame it on my blog! So I am going to make a public commitment here, to totally pull my socks up and get my pantry into shape!

How organised is your pantry?

When we built our new house 3 years ago I had planned to put a Chalkboard in either the kichen or the butlers pantry and it has never really eventuated. I am re-inspired by this gorgeous Vintage Chalkboard from Etsy Store SpellitOutdesigns.  Isn’t is cute?
